Classify, Collaborate, & Communicate: kindergarteners Explore the Animal Kingdom
CenturyLink /AzTEA Innovation in Classroom Technology Integration Grant
Program Description:
Our presentation will show how the Kindergartners started using graphic organizers on paper to begin their writing journey and then how they were able to transfer writing reports to being able to research on the computer. Pictures are shown of the progression of the project . Two different classrooms were part of the this project so each classroom bring s a different perspective how they used technology to impact their students. We will show how we used NearPod, Google maps, research & Power Point to teach students how to research.
Grant Description:
Collaborating with upper grade buddies impacted my students by giving them one on one support they need to access the research websites such as kids InfoBits, National geographic for kids, and Britannica School, in order to collect information on the topic of their choice.(S3.C2: PO1) It impacted 4th grade students by giving them the skill to explain how to use the computer as well as reading comprehension. The fourth grade students gained a deeper understanding of their technology standards by having to verbalize and demonstrate their knowledge to help the kindergarten students. We used the technology standard to guide our instruction. One that impacted the students Strand 2 Concept 2: Digital Solutions PO1. The fourth graders contributed to a cooperative learning project and demonstrated effective group behaviors while using digital collaborative resources with kindergarten students. Together they explored a variety of digital resources, processed the information and wrote an essay on an animal of their choice as well as creating a PowerPoint presentation using pictures from the internet. The projects are going to be presented to the principal, assistant principal, technology staff the first week of May. We used Nearpod which helped me control the computers while having students watch relevant YouTube videos for their research. We also used Google Maps to pin areas where the students could click on the map and information about their research would come up applicable to the area pinned. Abundance of resources that I've now collected and knowledge of various technology programs that can be incorporated onto a chrome book. Knowledge and awareness of their environment around them and to question how to look at animals and think about how to classify animals as they look around the world. Become the little scientist that we wanted them to become. We use these computers in my classroom all the time. The students practice typing skills, drag and drop skills, edit writing in small groups and turn in published work to my google classroom. The research project is now completed. It is in a PowerPoint format and the children are able to present their information orally while using their pictures and bullet points. Still doing anchor charts for all the Classification families, and pairing up with tech buddies to do Near Pod assignments on various animals. They are going to create a habitat from a shoebox of their animal and then use technology to video tape them presenting their information.
